My good friend saw an ad when she was around 16 years old. The article was an advertisement for weight-loss. Being a teenage girl, my friend was influenced heavily by the ad. It persuaded her that she needed to slim down. She insisted that she start “fasting”, as she called it, in order to lose the weight more quickly. For weeks, my friend starved herself. She looked terrible – she had deep, dark circles around her eyes and her bones were practically tearing through her skin. She was tired all of the time and very weak. She ended up going to rehab and also getting some therapy for her eating disorder. Tons of money was spent on her recovery.
My friend was convinced by one ad, one picture that was edited to make the model look perfect, to harm herself. By that ad, she thought that she could only being accepted and be beautiful if she lost a bunch of weight. Her identity got lost in the advertisement. In my friend’s case, the ad was heavily convincing.
